Local Sites We Love

If you’re interested in happenings in The Woodlands or Houston, you should check out these sites. From events to news, restaurants to personal stories, these blogs and websites have local insights and flavor to sate all your local curiosities.

H-Town Chow Down

This website follows food-related happenings in the Houston area (most recent post – Trader Joe’s coming to The Woodlands!). They are a self-proclaimed group of Houston foodies who “enjoy sharing their experiences, both good and bad.”  Their site has “a mix of news, rumors, opinion, and reviews,” and always offers something interesting for the foodie in all of us. Like their headlines says, “we eat almost every day.”

The Thinking Mother

This is another site offering the thoughts of a local resident, but this time with a face and a personal story. Christine is a mother of two young sons, and her blog offers a mix of thoughts on parenting, local artwork and culture, book reviews, and the experience of a young mother in our society. Her posts are usually brief and often inspirational and heartwarming, and I know there are many young mothers in The Woodlands who could relate to her musings.

The Woodlands Events

This is a great website if you’re looking for updates on what’s going on in The Woodlands (you may recognize it from many of my tweets). The site offers information on anything local you could possibly be looking for, with resources on dining, activities, entertainment, residential information, and more. It’s well-organized by dates so you can always find something to do and ways to get involved in the community. This site is basically the one-stop-shop for Woodlands events information (the name says it all).

The Woodlands Biotch

The internet’s anonymity allows for some interesting characters to emerge, and this is one of them. Warning: unapologetic opinions. If you enjoy intelligent and outspoken writing with local subjects, this is one to check out. This 30-something woman from The Woodlands uses this site as an alter ego to rant and express thoughts that may otherwise be inexpressable in connection to her personal identity. She offers thoughts on local education, politics, social events, popular culture, and anything you might never expect. The only requirement to enjoy it is an open mind, and perhaps a hint of sass.

Community Impact Newspaper

This whole site isn’t necessarily local – it’s a Texas newspaper that specializes in local news around the state. But their website has a section dedicated to the Houston Metro area, and specifically The Woodlands. If you’re looking for a different perspective on news stories about our area, this is a site to check. The newspaper has enough reach to delve deep into the happenings of the community, and always has an interesting tidbit to share about what’s going on where in our town.

Family Stories

Local blogger and “genealogist for hire,” this busy mother resides in The Woodlands and thoughtfully shares the stories of her family and others. She also shares her experiences as a genealogist and busy mother, and recently her endeavors to build up her own business in history-hunting. One of my favorite posts is about her venture into overgrown woods to find a grave and her discovery of a GPS grave-locating app. This site is a great reminder of how closely connected our local stories are with the history of everyone around us.
